Stop declining organ donation consent rates!

The issue

If you believe people who donate their organs are heroes, or their families who say YES are loving and compassionate people who help save the lives of strangers, please read on.

If you think these heroes should be more of our focus than the recipients they save read on.

If you think money should go to education of unsuspecting families rather than spent on professional sports sponsorship or lavish sports carnivals for recipients please read on.

There are serious concerns about Oversight of Australian Organ and Tissue Authority.

We, the undersigned, express our support for Mr. Robert Manning and share his concerns regarding the oversight of the Australian Organ and Tissue Authority (OTA) in managing the decline in Registration Rates, Next of Kin consent rates, and ultimately, donation to transplant rates over the past five years.

The critical role that families have in making organ donation possible by providing consent for their loved ones organ to be donated must be supported, recognised and communicated to all Australians.  DECEASED ORGAN DONORS & Their families must be honoured and recognised as Heroes!

**FACTS TO FOLLOW**

In 2018, Australia boasted 554 Deceased Donor Heroes, resulting in an admirable 1822 transplants (averaging 3.3 organs per hero). ✅

However, after five years under the leadership of the current CEO, OTA witnessed a decline to 454 heroes and 1224 transplants, indicating a notable decrease to 2.7 organs per hero. This reflects a concerning 20% reduction in lives saved per donor.

Registration rates have seen a consistent decline of almost 18% year on year, notably during DonateLife Week. The self-claimed figure of 60,000 registrations in the 2022 campaign dropped to a mere 50,000 in 2023.

Furthermore, it is evident that personal prejudice has clouded the CEO's focus, hindering initiatives to posthumously recognise deceased donors as heroes and educate next of kin and families on their critical role in making organ donation possible.

We, the undersigned, call upon the Senator Anne Ruston to start an enquiry into the Australian Organ and Tissue Authority to address these pressing concerns, reevaluate its strategies, and take immediate corrective actions to ensure the optimal functioning of the organ donation system in Australia.
