The Issue

Both my heart and world were shattered the day my 15-year-old son lost his life participating in a TikTok challenge known as Subway Surfing. It’s unimaginable that what seemed like a harmless trend could have such a devastating impact, but tragically we are not alone. Countless families have experienced similar heartbreak as dangerous social media challenges continue putting young lives at risk. Social media platforms are ubiquitous in today's world, often fostering creativity, communication, and connection. However, they also harbor perilous trends that target the impressionable minds of our youth. Studies reveal that 90% of teenagers aged 13-17 use social media regularly, and with this constant exposure, they are vulnerable to copying harmful behaviors and challenges without fully comprehending the potential consequences. We know from research by the American Academy of Pediatrics that the adolescent brain is still developing, making teenagers particularly susceptible to peer pressure and risky behavior endorsed by social media influencers. These challenge-related accidents and behaviors are exacerbated by the lack of proper age constraints on these platforms. Our goal is not to vilify social media, but rather to better protect our children by banning access for anyone under 17 years of age, ensuring parents can guide appropriate usage as youths transition into adulthood. By taking action, we can push legislation to hold these platforms accountable, enforce stricter age verifications, and reduce exposure to dangerous risks/trends. Let us come together to safeguard the younger generation from preventable tragedies. Your signature can make a difference in advocating for change that can preserve young lives and prevent other families from experiencing the same loss and grief as myself and so many other families have. Please sign this petition to urge policymakers and social media companies to act on this imperative issue, ensuring a safer online environment for our youth and the possibilities of who and what they can become with the right guidance.
