Stop Daylight Saving Time – Make Standard Time Permanent!
The Issue
Numerous studies show that permanent standard time helps with our circadian rhythm, as standard time is our natural time. It would be best to reflect noon as solar noon so that our bodies naturally sleep and wake up at the right time. With DST, many people feel groggy when waking up before sunrise. We understand this will cause 4 am sunrises in the summer. However, in the summer, you could cover your eyes with a sleeping mask or something to combat the sunlight, as numerous studies have already shown that we can sleep and wake up at the perfect time with the permanent standard time.
There is a 6% increase in car accidents yearly due to the biannual time switch. Also, adjusting to a new time would take an individual one week per time switch. That is two out of the fifty-two weeks in a year just adjusting to a time switch, which is 3.8% of the year!
Some people suggest staying with permanent daylight savings time because of this. If we use permanent daylight time, the sun won't rise until 8:30 am in the winter. That means it will be more challenging to wake up in the winter, and especially assuming that you have a one-hour commute to a 9-to-5 job, some of your commute will be when it is dark outside!
Now is the time to act because the more we delay this, the more people will be affected by this time change. People in industries requiring you to wake up early, like the healthcare and education industry, will also benefit because they will get to wake up when it's brighter outside or near sunrise.
