The issue

In recent years, Tasmania has been increasingly targeted as a prime location for the development of massive data centers. While these expansions are often painted as technological advancements bringing economic benefits, the costs to our environment, wildlife, and quality of life are becoming alarmingly evident. The pitiful truth is that the negative ramifications of establishing these data centers far outweigh any purported advantages.

Personally, the changes are affecting my family, neighbors, and community at an intense rate. The constant construction disrupts the serenity of our surroundings, leading to noise pollution and congestion in previously peaceful areas. Moreover, the significant resource consumption required for these facilities puts a massive strain on our local resources - electricity and water, largely sourced from our rivers and lakes, are being redirected to feed the relentless energy demands of these entities. This is not the future we envisioned for our beautiful state.

Tasmania's rich biodiversity, including many endemic species that are already facing threats from climate change and habitat destruction, are particularly vulnerable. Data centers, which use massive amounts of water for cooling, divert essential water resources, worsening the conditions for both flora and fauna. This diversion not only impacts groundwater levels but disrupts the fragile ecosystems that depend on steady hydrological cycles.

Additionally, we must address the risk to Tasmania's natural beauty. Our landscape draws tourists from around the globe, contributing significantly to the local economy. By allowing data centers to alter these landscapes, we are putting long-term economic benefits at risk for short-term gains. We urge our decision-makers to reconsider the allocation of lands for data centers and instead, protect them for preserving our natural heritage.

We propose seeking alternatives such as promoting smaller, community-oriented data storage solutions that are less resource-intensive, or encouraging the development of underground facilities that minimize surface disruption.

By signing this petition, you are taking a stand for Tasmania's future, supporting sustainable development, and ensuring the protection of our environment and wildlife for generations to come. Let us come together to express our dissent and demand a re-evaluation of current data center projects in our cherished state. Please sign the petition to stop the expansion of data centers in Tasmania.
