The issue

For decades, the Hunter Valley has been cherished for its breathtaking landscapes, vibrant communities, and unique cultural heritage. However, our way of life is currently under threat from the construction of massive data centres. These projects, being foisted upon us without proper consultation, jeopardize the very essence of our community.

Data centres require enormous amounts of energy and water to operate. According to sources such as the Australian Energy Regulator, a single data centre can consume as much power as a small town. This significant energy demand could lead to increased carbon emissions and strain on local resources, which is unacceptable given the global push towards sustainability and climate responsibility.

Moreover, the water needs of these centres will severely impact our local water supply, potentially compromising the availability of water for agriculture and domestic use. In an area known for its wineries, farming, and reliance on natural resources, this is a risk we cannot afford to take.

The residents of the Hunter Valley have not been given a fair opportunity to voice their concerns or participate in decision-making processes. This lack of transparency undermines our democratic rights and disregards the values of our close-knit community. Projects of such magnitude should consider the opinions and well-being of the local population.

We propose that all new data centre proposals be subjected to comprehensive environmental impact assessments and require full community consultation. Alternatives such as investing in renewable energy sources should be a priority before any decisions are made. Moreover, these projects must include commitments to sustainability and minimize environmental disruption.

By signing this petition, you are standing up for the Hunter Valley's unique ecosystem and its people. Let us show the authorities that our community deserves respect and that our voices matter. Sign now to protect the Hunter Valley from ill-considered development.
