The Issue

In recent years, data centers have proliferated across the United States at an alarming rate. These vast complexes are the backbone of our digital infrastructure, housing the servers that make the internet and digital communications possible. However, their unchecked expansion poses a severe threat to both human populations and wildlife across America as well as waterways and supplies.

Data centers consume a tremendous amount of resources. They require vast amounts of electricity, predominantly sourced from non-renewable energy, contributing significantly to carbon emissions and accelerating climate change. Additionally, they use a staggering amount of water for cooling purposes, which is especially concerning in regions already facing water scarcity issues. A report from the US Department of Energy highlights that data centers account for approximately 2% of the total electricity use in the United States, with projections showing that this could grow significantly if no action is taken.

The environmental footprint of data centers extends beyond resource consumption. The construction of these facilities often results in the destruction of natural habitats, displacing local wildlife and disrupting ecosystems. In some areas, the encroachment of data centers has led to increased noise pollution and traffic, disrupting the daily lives of nearby communities and lowering the quality of life.

The unchecked growth of data centers is not just an environmental issue but a threat to the well-being of future generations. We must act now to impose strict regulations that limit their environmental impact. Measures should include mandating the use of renewable energy sources, setting quotas on water usage, and implementing more rigorous environmental impact assessments before construction.

This is not just about preserving our natural landscapes, but about safeguarding our future and ensuring that America does not become a barren wasteland due to irresponsible industrial expansion. By signing this petition, you are urging lawmakers and local governments to take immediate and decisive action to regulate data centers and protect our environmental heritage and communities. Let us come together to halt this looming threat before it's too late. Sign the petition to make a stand for our environment and the future of America.
