The Issue

Life in Alaska is unique, characterized by our deep connection to nature, our communities, and our rich cultural heritage. We live in a state where the environment is not just a backdrop, but an integral part of our daily existence, providing us with the resources we need and shaping our way of life. For generations, Alaskans have thrived in a subsistence lifestyle, relying on the land and sea for nourishment, warmth, and cultural identity. Yet, this harmonious balance is at risk. The potential development of these data centers in Alaska poses a significant threat to our way of life.

Data centers, while they seem essential to the modern digital age, require an immense amount of energy and water to operate. Given Alaska's unique environment and infrastructure, the introduction of data centers could lead to several negative consequences. Firstly, the substantial energy consumption required by these facilities could lead to increased utility bills for Alaskans. Rising costs would disproportionately affect local communities, who already face some of the highest living expenses in the United States.

Let’s not forget the major environmental footprint data centers cannot be understated. They produce significant heat and require substantial amounts of water for cooling, potentially straining our local water resources and impacting our rich biodiversity. The environmental cost of building and operating these centers could lead to habitat destruction, threatening the wildlife that is fundamental not only to our ecosystem but also to our culture and livelihood.

We value our sustainable way of living in Alaska and the natural resources our state provides. The introduction of data centers not only risks altering the fabric of our communities but also endangers the pristine environment that defines Alaska.

Proponents of these developments often argue that they bring economic benefits and technological advancement. However, it is critical to weigh these benefits against the substantial risks and long-standing consequences for local communities and ecosystems. They also talk about how the production jobs these centers will bring. Unfortunately it’s been proven they won’t bring a substantial amount of jobs to help Alaska’s economy. In fact most center jobs are remote and very few within the center itself.

We urge policymakers to consider alternative locations for data center development, and to invest in technologies and practices that align with Alaska’s commitment to sustainability. We call on you to protect our way of life, our environment, and our future.

Please sign this petition to show your support for halting data center development in Alaska and to stand with us in preserving the beauty, sustainability, and culture of our great state.
