Stop data center construction in Grayslake, Illinois
The Issue
My parents have lived and owned a home in Grayslake, Illinois for over 20 years. Over this time, they've become deeply rooted in the community and cherish the small-town atmosphere that Grayslake provides. However, like many residents, they face exorbitant property taxes, currently paying three times the national average. The proposed construction of a data center in Grayslake threatens to exacerbate this financial burden.
Data centers are notorious for their vast consumption of energy and water resources. This increased demand will likely hike utility costs, placing an additional financial strain on residents already paying more than their fair share. Furthermore, while these centers promise job creation, the reality is often disappointing. Many of the jobs they provide are temporary or require specialized skills, leaving a negligible impact on local employment for Grayslake residents.
This is not just any data center, but a hyper-data center spanning over 160 acres of land, or 10 million square feet. This is a completely unnecessary maneuver for a town that is built on farmland, and has a thriving local farm community. Grayslake representatives with controversial investments, Brad Schneider of Illinois’ 10th district , and J.B. Pritzker all hold major investments in this project, while currently having no potential plan for the cost of living of residents.
The environmental impact must also be considered. Data centers generate significant noise pollution and heat. They disrupt the tranquil environment that Grayslake residents cherish. The increased traffic and infrastructure changes could further alter the town's character, diminishing the rural charm and community. Data centers of this size and scale have aggressive potential to harm public health in the community by impacting water availability and purity and causing constant noise pollution, including notoriously harmful infrasound. Proposals of this project claim that a “closed-loop” system will circumvent environmental and economic costs, but any scientist knows that this could not be further from the truth and that this claim is simply a deflection.
What Grayslake needs is sustainable development that enriches the community without unnecessary financial or environmental costs. We propose exploring alternatives that genuinely benefit the people of Grayslake. This could include investing in small businesses, recreational facilities, or green technology projects that align with our community's values and needs.
Illinois has already seen several towns abandoned on behalf of data centers, with residents being forced to abandon or face legal battles. Let’s protect Grayslake from becoming the next one.
We call upon local government officials to prioritize the needs of Grayslake residents over corporate interests. We must explore sustainable options that foster economic growth without compromising our quality of life.
Please sign this petition to urge the Grayslake Town Council and relevant authorities to halt the data center project until a comprehensive impact assessment and community consultation are conducted. Together, we can protect our town and secure a brighter future for the residents of Grayslake, Illinois.
