Growing up in Nashik, summers were a time of playing outside, climbing trees, and feeling the cool breeze beneath the shady canopies. These memories have become a distant echo as more and more trees are being cut down in our beloved city. I'm writing this petition because of a personal experience that has truly hit home for me—I can no longer find the cold comfort of shade during the soaring temperatures of summer.

Nashik, once known for its lush greenery and temperate climate, has been witnessing a rapid depletion of its tree cover. This deforestation is not only robbing us of the natural coolness provided by these trees but also worsening the urban heat island effect. In summer, temperatures in urban areas like Nashik can be 1 to 7 degrees Fahrenheit higher compared to outlying areas. Trees are our natural air conditioners, and cutting them down directly impacts our quality of life and the health of our environment.

Besides the immediate impact on temperature, trees offer a myriad of other benefits. They absorb pollutants, produce oxygen, and provide habitat to countless species. A single mature tree can absorb up to 48 pounds of carbon dioxide per year and can supply oxygen for two people. By maintaining and increasing our tree cover, we also increase our chances of living in a sustainable and healthy environment.

The current rate of urban development in Nashik is alarming, with infrastructure projects prioritizing concrete over nature. However, development shouldn't come at the expense of our environment. We can achieve growth by adopting a more sustainable approach, integrating green spaces into urban design, and implementing stricter laws and penalties against unnecessary tree cutting.

I urge the local government, city planners, and citizens of Nashik to come together to stop indiscriminate tree felling. We must demand that tree surveys and environmental assessments be a mandatory part of development plans. Additionally, initiating tree plantation drives, protecting existing green spaces, and ensuring public awareness campaigns are crucial steps forward.
