Stop cutting trees in Bangalore Cantonment Railway Station
The Issue
I grew up near the Bangalore Cantonment Railway Station, a place which has always been more than just a transit hub for many of us. The station is home to a magnificent collection of trees, some of which have stood for over a century, providing shade, clean air, and an ecological balance in the heart of this bustling city.
This invaluable green patch was in the process of being declared as a protected Biodiversity Heritage Site due to its rich natural habitat and historical significance. Instead, plans have been initiated to cut down over 300 trees to pave the way for a commercial high-rise and additional parking spaces. Heartbreakingly, this means we are on the brink of losing a heritage that contributes to the environmental and cultural legacy of Bangalore.
The trees at Bangalore Cantonment Railway Station are not just static entities; they are living histories, witnesses to the city’s development. They play a critical role in sustaining urban biodiversity, helping mitigate air pollution and providing a crucial habitat for urban wildlife. Studies have shown that urban green spaces improve air quality, decrease local temperatures, and enhance mental health among urban dwellers.
Bangalore has already lost a significant portion of its tree cover over the decades due to urban expansion, which has resulted in rising temperatures and increased pollution levels. We cannot afford to lose more trees when climate change and air pollution are already significant threats to our health and well-being. The ecological loss from cutting down these trees far outweighs any potential financial gain from new constructions.
We urge the relevant authorities to reconsider this decision. Instead of cutting down these trees, alternative solutions should be explored. For example, developing a multi-level underground parking space or redesigning the project to accommodate existing trees could be viable alternatives.
