The Issue
I have limited mobility due to my two replacement knees and chronic arthritis in my shoulders. When I visit Millom Sea Wall, especially for fishing, carrying all of my equipment is impossible. The same goes for a day out on the beach or rocks with a picnic – umbrellas, chairs, and food. Like many other residents of Haverigg and Millom, I rely heavily on vehicle access to enjoy these local amenities to the fullest.
Recently, a last-minute amendment in the plans for the Millom Sea Wall, known as the ‘Iron Line’, includes a proposal to close it off to vehicles by implementing a Traffic Regulation Order (TRO). This decision not only disregards the needs of the local community but it also threatens to curtail the freedom of individuals with limited mobility and those engaging in activities like fishing that require the transportation of heavy gear.
The Hodbarrow Nature Reserve, where this sea wall is located, is a vital resource for both locals and visitors. Cutting off vehicle access would severely restrict access for elderly and disabled individuals, alienating them from this beautiful landscape. It’s not just about convenience; it’s about equal and fair access for everyone.
According to a survey by the Mobility and Access Committee for Scotland, transportation accessibility plays a critical role in the social inclusion of individuals with mobility impairments. By removing vehicle access, we risk isolating a portion of our community who already face significant barriers to participation.
We propose an alternative solution: Implement a permit system for vehicle access that prioritizes individuals with mobility issues, local residents, and regular users such as fishermen. This balanced approach ensures that our community can continue to enjoy the Millom Sea Wall while also respecting the concerns surrounding environmental impact and preservation.
We urge local council representatives and planners to reconsider this amendment and work collaboratively with the community to find a viable solution that addresses everyone’s needs.
Please sign this petition to stop the TRO from limiting vehicle access to Millom Sea Wall. Your support is crucial in ensuring that this cherished local resource remains accessible and inclusive for all residents and visitors.
