After a personal visit to this establishment it was made very clear this element of Indigenous culture is being used purely for aesthetic and profit!
Shuga's continues to disregard concerns of ongoing trauma being inflicted due to the inappropriate display of this teepee. Shuga's is actively contributing to ongoing oppression and exploitation of Indigenous culture by ignoring the requests to remove the teepee by our local community. Our cultural history, elements and traditions are not yours to take/use. The symbolic presence and historical meaning of this dwelling and an entire culture is being misrepresented and disrespected.
It's OK to make mistakes but it is important not to let privilege distort the responsibility in making corrections. If a person of color says your behavior is culturally appropriative it is critical to take that criticism at face value. Corrections can be making teepee inaccessible immediately, providing an apology to the Indigenous community and gifting the teepee to an Indigenous community/land owner. I truly believe a decision made from better understanding will be made.
We are still here and the trauma that runs through our blood will not allow continued oppression, cultural exploitation, cultural appropriation and further marginalization. We are going to start gathering for future planning and if you would like to be involved send an email to rfahje@gmail.com.
Thank you for those who have continued to support! Calling on everyone to continue having conversations, they are powerful.
