The continued need to have conversations about cultural appropriation is beyond me, however the need continues. Our family will continue to initiate these conversations and gain support within the community until the teepee is removed from Shuga's.
We call on the community. Consider taking a minute to call Shuga's 719-328-1412 and have a discussion. Consider leaving a voicemail for the General Manager, by the push of a button! How about a simple email to hello@shugas.com? Some might want to take a more personal approach and send a letter addressed to 702 S Cascade Ave., Colorado Springs, CO 80903. Others may consider having the direct conversations with those around you at any given time, canvassing, rallying and making a presence. A business owner might reach out and discuss better business ethics with them. If you would like to make contact, email me at rfahje@gmail.com.
Direct messages to those known as owners has been made and ignored. Letters have been sent without return. Emails have been sent to and forwarded from allies without replies. The petition continues to grow. Statements of being Indigenous owned were made over brief phone contact. If are true-should have purchased from an Indigenous company from the start, be very aware of the environment you are raising a teepee in and activities taking place inside of such a symbolic element of our people, Plains People.
Allies are needed millions of ancestors ago.
