I am not even of driving age yet, and here I am exposed to something no one of any age should ever encounter. This is a personal story, one that unfortunately too many people with social media experiences these days, and it has to stop.
The traumatic and destructive impact of CSAM cannot be overstated. Not only does it perpetuate violence against innocent children, but the psychological scars left on all who encounter these materials—seemingly without warning—are very real. It's a clear violation of human rights that should not be allowed to continue, especially on a widespread platform like Twitter.
Recently, Twitter has seen a concerning increase in the number of CSAM-related posts and promotions. According to a 2021 report by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), millions of CSAM materials circulate online annually. Despite Twitter's policy against such content, gaps in enforcement have allowed it to proliferate.
Texas, like all states, has strict regulations against CSAM, but enforcing these laws in the digital age requires cooperation from social media giants. We need Twitter to take a firmer stance and commit to rigorous monitoring and quick action to remove CSAM from its platform. This involves utilizing more advanced AI detection tools, hiring more content moderators with specialized training, and increasing transparency with law enforcement to identify and prosecute offenders swiftly.
We call upon lawmakers in Texas to hold social media platforms accountable and enhance digital safety protocols. This includes imposing steeper fines and clearer guidelines for failing to remove illegal content.
