Stop Coyote Culling in Toronto, ON

Stop Coyote Culling in Toronto, ON
The Issue
Recently, the city of Toronto euthanized (shot) two coyotes in the Liberty Village and Fort York areas, citing them as a threat to people. This is deeply concerning as it is not an acceptable way to address any issues relating to human-coyote coexistence. There are alternative solutions available, such as relocation when necessary, but resorting to killing is never a humane or sustainable answer.
Coyotes play a vital role in maintaining healthy ecosystems by controlling rodent populations and ensuring ecological balance. The practice of culling coyotes through bounties, trapping, or other lethal methods is inhumane, ineffective, and often indiscriminate. Scientific studies have shown that lethal control methods actually increase coyote populations by disrupting pack structures, leading to increased breeding and migration.
Instead of lethal measures, we need to implement non-lethal methods to manage coyote populations in Toronto. These methods could include relocation in extreme cases, habitat protection, and community education to help people understand the vital role coyotes play in our ecosystem. These measures will foster a more harmonious coexistence between humans and coyotes.
Moreover, education about coyote behavior and ecology can help dispel myths and reduce fear. Understanding that coyotes are generally shy and avoid human interactions unless provoked or attracted by food sources is crucial. Simple measures like securing trash bins and removing outdoor pet food can significantly reduce encounters.
We respectfully request that all levels of government enact and uphold policies that reflect modern conservation practices and humane treatment of wildlife to reconsider their approach to coyote management and adopt non-lethal strategies that align with scientific findings and ethical considerations.
Please support this petition to stop the cruel and counterproductive culling of coyotes in our city.
