Stop counting excused absences against exam exemptions

Stop counting excused absences against exam exemptions
The Issue
Mental health is an issue that most teenagers are affected by, often triggering fatigue and a loss of motivation. For many students, they need the opportunity to take a day off school to recharge and improve their mental well-being. Just as adults sometimes require time off to recuperate, students too need adequate rest to perform better academically. Unfortunately, our school district's policy of counting absences against final exam exemptions is making this need much more difficult to meet.
It's time to challenge the current policy because it unfairly penalizes students who must prioritize their mental health. While attendance is essential, it's crucial to acknowledge the difference between a student neglecting their responsibilities and one who genuinely needs to address personal health issues. When excused absences are counted against exam exemptions, students feel compelled to attend school even when unwell, both physically and mentally, which subsequently hampers their overall performance and well-being.
Research consistently shows that mental health challenges among students are rising, with many teenagers experiencing anxiety, depression, and other related disorders. School districts across the nation have begun to recognize the importance of student mental health and have revised policies to not penalize students for taking necessary mental health days. It's vital for our district to follow suit.
We propose a review and amendment of the current attendance policy. By excluding excused absences from affecting final exam exemptions, we can send a clear message that mental health is valued and prioritized. This change not only aligns with best practices but also ensures that students who take care of their mental well-being are not unfairly disadvantaged.
Let's take this significant step towards creating a more supportive and understanding school environment. By signing this petition, you are advocating for a fairer and more compassionate approach to student attendance policies, which acknowledges the importance of mental health and supports all learners in their quest for academic success. Please sign this petition to support the mental well-being of our students and to ensure they can reach their full potential without being penalized for taking necessary mental health days. Together, we can make a difference for the betterment of our students and their futures.
