The Issue

A billionaire family is buying up a historic Detroit neighborhood, one home at a time — and city officials keep helping them do it. Since 2019, Crown Enterprises, owned by the wealthy Moroun family, has taken over more than 160 lots in Cadillac Heights.

The city handed Crown dozens of properties in a 2019 land swap, then gave the company first rights to buy more homes through 2034. Crown demolished houses and built a concrete plant that covers the block in dust and noise, day and night. Longtime residents have sold their homes and left, saying they can no longer breathe clean air in their own backyards.

Christina Kary, 86, has watched her block disappear. "It's home. I'm not leaving," she told ProPublica and BridgeDetroit. Detroit Mayor Mary Sheffield and City Council members James Tate Jr. and Scott Benson can stop handing Cadillac Heights over to Crown Enterprises by blocking further land transfers and rezoning the area to protect the families who remain.

Sign the petition to demand Detroit stop selling out Cadillac Heights — before the whole neighborhood disappears.
