‘Ex-Flight Attendants Say Air In Boeing's Cabins Is Toxic
( Law360 January 29, 2020)
The Boeing Co. has known for decades that the air in most of its planes can get contaminated and severely injure passengers but has failed to substantively research or address the issue, three former flight attendants claimed in Illinois state court Tuesday.
Boeing has known that it needs to create a list of possible contaminants that could be present when a contaminated air event occurs, but the company has yet to finalize such a list because it "has never captured, documented, evaluated, assessed or analyzed a contaminated air incident in-flight," the former flight attendants claimed.
Converters and sensors would go a long way to reduce passengers' exposure to the contaminants, but Boeing has "repeatedly cut or eliminated budgets for such research and development," according to the suit.
A number of sensors have been developed and approved for in-flight use, according to the suit. But a Boeing engineer has testified in other toxic air cases that the company hasn't implemented them on its planes yet because it "fears the information captured by those sensors ... could be used against Boeing in litigation," the former flight attendants claimed.
With Boeing failing to take action on the issue, it's left to pilots' noses to detect contaminated air events while flying, Brodkowitz told Law360.
"It's a smell test," she (Alisa Brodkowitz) said. "Talk about canary in the coal mine. The flight attendants are the canaries, the airplane is the coal mine, and sometimes those canaries never fly again." (**Source law360.com)
