HIGHER RATES OF CANCER IN FLIGHT ATTENDANTS:
Summary by Bearnairdine Beaumont - www.aerotoxicteam.com
‘Flight attendants are an understudied occupational group, despite undergoing a wide range of adverse job-related exposures, including to known carcinogens. In our study, we aimed to characterize the prevalence of cancer diagnoses among U.S. cabin crew relative to the general population.
Results:
Compared to NHANES participants with a similar socioeconomic status (n = 2729), flight attendants (n = 5366) had a higher prevalence of every cancer we examined, especially breast cancer, melanoma, and non-melanoma skin cancer among females. SPR for these conditions were 1.51 (95% CI: 1.02, 2.24), 2.27 (95% CI: 1.27, 4.06), and 4.09 (95% CI: 2.70, 6.20), respectively. Job tenure was positively related to non-melanoma skin cancer among females, with borderline associations for melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers among males. Consistent with previous studies, we observed associations between job tenure and breast cancer among women who had three or more children.
Conclusions:
We observed higher rates of specific cancers in flight attendants compared the general population, some of which were related to job tenure. Our results should be interpreted in light of self-reported health information and a cross-sectional study design. Future longitudinal studies should evaluate associations between specific exposures and cancers among cabin crew.’

Could it be something to do with this?

But HSE rules and regulations regarding exposure to harmful chemicals do not apply on U.K. registered aircraft. The HSE have a ‘memorandum of understanding with the CAA’ who regulate on the Health & Safety Of Passengers and Crew onboard aircraft. Benzene (along with many other harmful chemicals including organophosphates) is used both in aircraft fuel - JET A1/JP8 and also aircraft engine oil - Exxon Mobil JET II - onboard most U.K. registered aircraft. Passengers and crew are subjected to breathing exhaust from other aircraft whilst taxiing, which is drawn into the aircraft engines and into the air conditioning system. Harmful toxins from aircraft oil and hydraulic fluid are also regularly leaked into the (bleed-air)air conditioning system on all aircraft (except Boeing 787).
It has been suggested that it is not only each individual chemical causing injury, (which the U.K. Government and its agencies state are at ‘safe’ levels during ‘normal’ operations - despite there being no monitoring systems onboard aircraft to confirm), BUT also the combination of many chemicals mixed together in aerosol form which is causing many of the health issues and untimely deaths of airline passengers and crew:

In other news - AIRBUS - re Coronavirus - say the air drawn through the engines is ‘fresh’ - conveniently omitting the fact that it becomes contaminated from oil & hydraulic fluid:

LUFTHANSA following suit:
Summary by Bearnairdine Beaumont - www.aerotoxicteam.com
’What's happening at Lufthansa regarding the VIRUS? >>> "More specifically, it should be noted that both crews and staff at Chinese airports are provided with face masks for personal use. It is up to the crews whether they wear masks on the routes to and from China and Hong Kong. As stated on request, a general distribution of face masks for passengers is not planned.

❗️➡️There is, in any case, an extremely low risk of catching a virus during a flight, the airline says. The aircraft of the Lufthansa group are equipped with filters to clean the cabin air. All circulating air is filtered "and cleaned of impurities such as dust, bacteria and viruses from the cabin air". In addition to the circulating cabin air, passengers also receive fresh air from outside, so-called bleed air, which is diverted from the engines on most models.

❗️➡️At Lufthansa, it is said that the aircraft filters meet the standard of filters in a clinical operating room. Literally: "By using these special filters, the cabin air is cleaner than the air that people on earth breathe. In addition, the air flow in the aircraft runs from top to bottom and not in a horizontal direction, for example from front to back.”

NO FURTHER COMMENT....’

If, as Airbus and Lufthansa suggest - there is such a ‘low risk of catching a virus during a flight’ what happened on these two aircraft? Was it a virus or was it contaminated air which really caused the illnesses experienced? -
VIRGIN ATLANTIC - March 2019
Gastroenteritis was suggested, but the passengers had coughs and sore throats which are typical acute reactions to toxic chemical fumes polluting the cabin air.

A spokesman for Switzerland-based cruise line MSC Cruises, which operates MSC Preziosa, said: "We are still investigating what may have caused the illness and we are currently waiting for further updates from Gatwick Airport medical services.
"What we do know is that, on MSC Preziosa, no cases of acute gastroenteritis have been reported in the past 14 days."

Five cabin aircrew from Virgin Atlantic also became sick during this flight. Strange coincidence?, or were they also on the cruise ship?

EMIRATES - September 2018
Three passengers and seven crew members went to the hospital, Dubai-based Emirates said.
‘Very intense coughing. Violently sick. Going into the bathroom a lot,” she said when asked to describe the scene.’

Influenza has an incubation period of a minimum of 24 hours, so how could crew on this flight also become ill at the same time? Were they also at the Hajj with the passengers the day before?

The filters used by airlines are HEPA filters. With regards to stopping viruses onboard aircraft it is probably dependent on each individual airlines’ maintenance practices as to how often the filters are changed to ensure optimal performance.
Regarding contaminated air from other aircraft exhaust (fuel), oil and hydraulic fluid - HEPA filters DO NOT STOP this fine particulate matter from entering the air conditioning system onboard aircraft.
If you are travelling onboard an aircraft it would be wise to protect yourself and your family:
