We often get ‘tip-offs’ of fume events that have occurred and then wait for the reports to arrive which give us more information to enable us to clarify the details and to confirm the event.
What we have noticed over the last year is a significant reduction in the number of reports being received from Cabin Crew. So, we discussed this at length...
The same number of fume events are happening because we are receiving the same - if not more tip-off’s, so what could be stopping the reports coming in?
We came to the conclusion that it is fear. Fear of being singled out by their employer. Fear of being told by their employer they are the only crew member to have reported fumes onboard. Fear of repercussions from their employer for daring to step out of line -despite the fact that fumes from aircraft oil and hydraulic fluids etc. are very harmful to health and can cause long-term damage.
This testimony confirmed our thoughts and subsequent conclusion:
Pedro worked for 12 years for a Spanish Airline as Cabin Crew. He began his temporary contract with them in 2006 and because he raised concerns with his employer with regards to FUMES onboard one of the aircraft he was working on (which the industry constantly try to hide and disguise by calling a Fume Event an Odour Event) his contract was subsequently terminated in 2016. It also transpires that his contract with this airline was illegal and this malpractice along with others by many airlines has just been acknowledged today by EASA:

This is his story of what happened at that time. (This has been translated from Spanish).
