The Issue

Our public lands are invaluable treasures, rich with history and biodiversity. Unfortunately, they are under siege. Observing pupfish in the wild has been a source of inspiration to me. These tiny fish, brimming with resilience, have adapted to thrive under the harshest of desert conditions — temperatures soaring above 95 degrees Fahrenheit and salinity thrice as salty as the ocean. The thought of these majestic creatures, along with other wildlife, losing their habitat is heart-wrenching. Worse yet is the loss suffered by indigenous communities who may be cut off from their sacred burial sites.

The construction of a second border wall at the Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, as well as the existing wall on Tohono O’odham land, threatens to devastate fragile ecosystems and sacred lands. In the Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge, construction has already marred a 1,000 year old intaglio, a testament to our short-sightedness. The project risks dismantling the habitat of the endangered pronghorn and jeopardizes Quitobaquito Springs within Organ Pipe, a vital refuge for two endangered species.

By pursuing these projects, we are not only threatening the existence of endangered species but also setting dangerous precedents. The painful erosion of access — both for wildlife and people — should give us all pause. Public lands are meant for preservation and appreciation, not destruction.

It’s crucial that we speak out against these disastrous efforts, not only to protect our land and wildlife but also to preserve our cultural heritage. Let's urge the administration to halt this destructive construction and seek more sustainable and respectful solutions.

Join me in calling for an immediate stop to the construction of the border wall at Organ Pipe, Cabeza Prieta, and the Tohono O’odham land. Together, we can ensure our public lands remain sanctuaries for future generations and wildlife that call them home. Please sign this petition and help us preserve these irreplaceable treasures.
