The Issue

I live in the beautiful, serene area of Mount Pleasant, surrounded by residential neighborhoods, winery’s and orchards; including Green Dance winery and Sandhill berries and surrounding farms. For years, our community has thrived on the natural beauty and fresh air, which are now under threat due to the proposed construction of an asphalt plant in our area.

The potential negative impacts of this plant on our community are deeply concerning. Firstly, the air quality will suffer dramatically if this plant is allowed to operate. Asphalt plants emit various pollutants, including volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and particulate matter, which are known to cause serious health problems, such as respiratory issues and heart disease. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, living close to such facilities significantly increases the risk of these health problems.

Moreover, the presence of an asphalt plant would severely diminish the property value in our neighborhoods. Communities like ours depend heavily on real estate stability. The unsightly and polluting nature of the plant would deter potential homebuyers, drastically affecting our investments and the future of our families.

Additionally, there's the issue of persistent odors emanating from the plant, which would suffocate the aroma of the surrounding vineyards and spoil the enjoyment of our outdoor spaces. The Green Dance Winery is a local gem, attracting tourism and supporting our local economy. Its reputation would be jeopardized by the intrusive smells of asphalt, turning away visitors and affecting local commerce.

It is paramount that we address these concerns to protect our community’s health, well-being, and economic future. Alternatives exist; proposing to relocate the plant to a more industrial area would be a viable solution that balances economic development without compromising our quality of life.

I call upon the local authorities and stakeholders to reconsider this construction project. We need your help to protect Mount Pleasant and ensure it remains a clean, healthy, and pleasant place for all residents. Please join me in opposing the construction of the asphalt plant by signing this petition. Together, we can make a difference and preserve our community's unique character and environment.
