Stop Construction of Proposed Microtel Hotel on Route 113

Stop Construction of Proposed Microtel Hotel on Route 113
The Issue
We, the undersigned parents, educators, and community members of Berlin, MD, strongly oppose the proposed construction of a Microtel Hotel on Route 113 in front of Bundles of Joy University Inc. and the Healing Arts Center of the Eastern Shore. Our primary concern is the safety, well-being, and optimal learning environment for the young children who attend Bundles of Joy University Inc. and the individuals who attend the Healing Arts Center of the Eastern Shore. The presence of the Microtel Hotel in such close proximity to our childcare center raises serious concerns, including but not limited to:
Child Safety Risks- Motels typically bring a transient population, increasing the presence of unfamiliar individuals in the area. This raises security concerns for the children and the staff at Bundles of Joy University.
Traffic/Parking Issues- Due to the proposed size, increased vehicle activity around the motel from motel guests, staff, and deliveries will lead to congestion and unsafe conditions for families during drop-off and pick-up times.
Noise and Disruption- The 24-hour operations of a motel, along with potential guests or events, could disrupt the peaceful learning environment crucial for early childhood education.
Environmental and Public Health Concerns- The Increased waste, pollution, and potential criminal activity associated with motels will negatively impact the surrounding neighborhood and Bundles of Joy University along with Berlin Intermediate School, which is located directly across the street from the motel.
Increased Crime Risk- Studies have shown that motels can be linked to illicit activities such as drug use, human trafficking, and other criminal behaviors. The proximity of such activity to a preschool is an unacceptable risk to our students.
Potential Loss of Enrollment- Parents may feel uncomfortable sending their children to a preschool located directly behind a motel due to the above-mentioned safety concerns, which could result in a decline in enrollment and affect Bundle of Joy University's ability to operate successfully as it has for over the past 26 years.
Zoning Precedent for Further Commercialization- Allowing a motel near Bundles of Joy University could set a precedent for further commercial development in the area, potentially leading to more businesses that are not child-friendly and changing the character of the neighborhood and surrounding areas.
We urge local officials to reconsider the zoning and placement of this motel and prioritize the well-being of our children and community. Instead, we advocate for the thoughtful development that aligns with the needs of families and preserves the integrity of our neighborhood. By signing this petition, we stand united in opposition to the Microtel Hotel's construction located off Route 113 in front of Bundles of Joy University Inc. and the Healing Arts Center of the Eastern Shore and request immediate action to prevent this development.
