As a concerned resident of  my hometown, Columbus, Indiana, I am witnessing an unnecessary and costly project unfold—construction at the local dam.

The construction at the Columbus Indiana dam, touted as a development project to build an attraction, lacks transparency and tangible benefits for our community. The funds allocated for this project could be better utilized to address essential issues such as improving public schools, enhancing local infrastructure (not destroying it), upgrading public safety facilities, and supporting community programs that directly benefit residents (Homeless shelters, much needed road repairs, etc.)

Additionally, the environmental impact of this construction is concerning. The area surrounding the dam has always been a frequently used fishing spot, and very photogenic scenery, which has been adversely affected by ongoing construction activities. At a time when environmental conservation, and structural integrity should be prioritized, it is imperative that we reevaluate the necessity of this project before it is to late.

The financial burden imposed on taxpayers cannot be ignored. Our hard-earned dollars should be directed towards projects that foster community growth, meet public needs, and have long-lasting positive impacts. So with the power of social media combined with public opinion, let us work together to ensure transparency, accountability, and proper allocation of funds in Columbus, Indiana.
