Stop congressional pay during government shutdowns

Stop congressional pay during government shutdowns
The Issue
Families are suffering due to the ongoing government shutdown, and I know we're not alone. Many families like ours rely on the steady income from government jobs to pay bills, put food on the table, and provide for our children. Yet, while we struggle, members of Congress continue to receive their paychecks. This fundamentally unfair situation needs to change now.
The reality is stark: when Congress cannot agree on a budget, it results in a government shutdown that affects countless federal workers, many of whom live paycheck to paycheck. During these times, essential personnel are required to work without pay, while others are indefinitely furloughed. This adds stress and hardship during an already challenging time.
Consider this: according to a report from the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, the 2013 shutdown cost the economy over $24 billion. The same committee stated that the 2018-2019 shutdown, the longest in history, brought about extreme financial stress to approximately 800,000 federal workers. Many of these workers had to turn to food banks and other community resources to make ends meet.
Meanwhile, congressional members keep receiving their salaries as if nothing is wrong. This not only creates a moral incongruity but also diminishes the urgency needed to resolve budget standoffs. According to the U.S. Constitution, members of Congress cannot change their salaries during their current terms, but they can voluntarily refuse pay.
We propose that Congress should lead by example. During future government shutdowns, they should place their salaries in escrow and only receive them once the government is operational again. To make this a reality, laws need to be changed to mandate this practice.
Join me in urging Congress to adopt a more equitable system that truly reflects our values of fairness and shared responsibility. Let's ensure our lawmakers experience the same stakes we do and make it a priority to find speedy resolutions to political gridlocks. Every voice counts.
Please support this movement and sign the petition to stop congressional pay during government shutdowns. Your action can bring about the change we so desperately need.
