The Issue

I have experienced firsthand the detrimental effects of the IHRA’s definition of antisemitism. As a student activist, I found myself silenced and censored for speaking up on vital issues that affect both my peers and me. The adoption of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s (IHRA) definition in public schools could further suppress students’ freedom of expression and hinder our ability to advocate for social justice.

The IHRA definition has been widely criticized by esteemed scholars and human rights organizations for being overly broad and vague, as it potentially categorizes legitimate criticism of the State of Israel as antisemitic. This stifles healthy discussion and critical thinking, essential components of any educational environment. In fact, a 2019 report by Human Rights Watch highlighted that the adoption of such a definition could lead to a chilling effect on free speech in educational institutions.

One actionable solution is for Concord Public Schools to develop their own definition of antisemitism, in collaboration with community members, educators, and human rights experts. This definition should be clear, focused, and robust, ensuring that it protects students from genuine antisemitic incidents without curtailing their freedom to discuss complex international issues.
