Stop City of Eureka from making C Street a one-way traffic w/bike lane
The Issue
As a resident of C Street in Eureka, I have experienced firsthand the street's vibrant history and strong sense of community. However, the recent proposal to convert C Street into a one-way bike lane raises serious concerns that could negatively impact residents, emergency services, and the broader neighborhood.
Safety Risks for All Road Users
The proposed design presents notable safety hazards. One-way bike lanes, particularly when introduced without careful planning, can create confusion at intersections and increase the likelihood of collisions. Studies, such as one published in the Canadian Journal of Transport, show that poorly designed bike lanes can raise the risk of accidents by up to 31%. Mixing directional bike traffic with traditional vehicle flow—especially in a residential area with frequent street access—could put both cyclists and motorists at greater risk.
Impacts on Accessibility and Quality of Life
This proposal also threatens the accessibility and daily lives of residents, particularly those with disabilities. Many depend on nearby curbside parking to maintain mobility and independence. Eliminating or limiting this parking may force individuals to park farther from their homes, creating unnecessary hardship and lowering their quality of life.
Preservation of Community and Heritage
C Street is more than just a thoroughfare—it is a historic and integral part of Eureka’s identity. Any significant redesign risks disrupting the unique character of our neighborhood. We should be enhancing our community spaces in ways that respect their legacy and accommodate all who live and travel here.
Emergency Response Concerns
C Street is home to essential public safety infrastructure, including the Humboldt Bay Fire Station and the Eureka Police Department. Altering the traffic flow or reducing street accessibility could slow emergency response times, putting the safety of the entire community at risk.
A Better Path Forward:
We support bike safety and sustainable transportation, but not at the cost of resident welfare and public safety. There are better alternatives—such as enhancing existing bike infrastructure, creating shared-use paths, or implementing protected lanes that do not restrict two-way vehicle traffic or accessible parking.
We urge city planners to pause and reconsider this proposal. Engage with the community. Explore smarter, safer options. Let’s work together to ensure that C Street remains a place where everyone—cyclists, drivers, residents, and first responders—can coexist safely and harmoniously.
Please sign this petition to keep C Street safe, accessible, and inclusive for all.
