In June 2020, Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot began closing Arab and Muslim owned stores whenever a crime occurred near their properties. She was not closing stores owned by non-Arab non-Muslims when crimes occurred near their properties.

More than 150 stores were closed. The Arab and Muslim community pushed back and forced Lightfoot to stop. 

When the Community stood up and confronted her at a press conference on Sept. 13, 2020, she re-opened all of the stores to minimize the political damage to her image.

Then, in early May, Lightfoot began closing more Arab and Muslim stores incredulously blaming them for the street gang violence that occurred near their properties.
