The Issue

As a member of a minority group at Columbus State University, I find it deeply offensive that our institution would allow an event like Charlie Kirk's vigil to take place on our campus. The majority of our student body does not want this vigil to happen, and it's disheartening that the university is considering moving forward with it.

Columbus State University prides itself on being an inclusive and welcoming environment for all students. Charlie Kirk, however, is a controversial figure known for his divisive rhetoric that often targets minority groups and fosters an environment of hostility and division. Allowing such a gathering contradicts the very values our university stands for.

Many students feel unsettled and unsafe at the thought of their campus being used as a platform for such polarizing views. The presence of this event could lead to increased tensions and discomfort among students who simply want to feel safe and accepted when they come to school.

Colleges should be places of learning, growth, and diversity, where every student feels valued and heard. By hosting a vigil for Charlie Kirk, Columbus State University risks alienating a significant portion of its student body and tarnishing its reputation as a nurturing academic environment.

We urge the university administration to listen to the voices of its students and cancel the vigil. It's crucial that the university acknowledges and respects the sentiments of its student population, ensuring that our campus remains a space for inclusivity and positive dialogue.
