Stop Charging for Paper Shopping Bags at Retail Stores

Stop Charging for Paper Shopping Bags at Retail Stores
The Issue
I am a concerned individual deeply affected by the recent trend of retailers charging for paper shopping bags. I firmly believe that the original intent of charging for bags was to minimize the wasteful use of plastic packets, not to profit off environmentally-friendly paper bags. Now, not only are we being asked to pay extra, but we are also being subjected to subtle brand advertising, as the store's name is boldly emblazoned on every bag.
It seems that this practice is not in alignment with its original purpose. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), paper bags are actually less detrimental to the environment compared to plastic bags, as they are recyclable and biodegradable (EPA, 2018). Plus, consumers are now effectively paying to advertise the store's brand. This move feels less like a bid to encourage environmentally conscious behavior and more like a new profit channel for these companies.
We believe that making consumers pay for paper bags is not justifiable and is a violation of the original spirit of environmental protection laws. Therefore, we urge all retail stores to cease charging for paper bags and uphold the true intent of these laws: to reduce waste and protect our precious environment. Join us in this fight against unnecessary charges on paper shopping bags. Sign this petition.
