Last night at the freshman orientation meeting, administrators announced that U-32 high school will move from eight periods a day to seven.  This means that all students will lose one elective per year.  For the many freshman who will take a world language this means that they will have only one elective slot available. This is not enough! A student who loves theater class and also wants to take choir no longer can. A student who is considering an engineering career and wants to accelerate in math while continuing to play their instrument in the band no longer can. High school should be a time of exploration and the proposed schedule change is too limiting.

In addition, two semesters of PE (1A and 1B) will now be required freshman year. Until now, PE 1B has been available to grades 9-11 allowing greater flexibility.  

The last proposed change is adding core teams for freshman. Again, this would limit needed flexibility. A student that is ready to accelerate in math will be unable to if the math they need is not offered on the core. Similarly, a student who is transferring in and has already completed earth science will no longer be able to move on to biology.

We are asking the administrators to keep the current high school schedule as it is.
