Thank you to everyone who has signed and shared this petition so far. Your support is making a real impact — and now we need you to show up for the upcoming votes on the York County Library Board's proposed discriminatory and unconstitutional collection policy changes.
The York County Library Board Policy Committee will meet on December 8th at 1:00 the York Library Branch (21 East Liberty St.). The full board will then meet on December 11th at 1:00 the Fort Mill Branch (1818 2nd Baxter Crossing). Your peaceful presence at these meetings will be POWERFUL.
Bring signs, wear Rainbow colors, LGBTQ+ supportive, or library supportive shirts. Arrive EARLY if you want a seat in the meeting room as they have been limiting the amount of people that they allow in. Overflow crowds outside of the meeting room show how much the community cares.
According to the Policy Committee’s agenda, they plan to vote on their collection policy change recommendations on December 8th. Based on this, we anticipate that the full board will vote on these proposed changes on December 11th.
Greenville County is already being sued by patrons with the help of ACLU SC for an almost identical policy, and yet the board is still pushing forward discriminatory and unconstitutional policy changes.
🚫 One of the most alarming proposed changes?
Relocating children’s and young adult books with LGBTQ+ content into the adult section.
This is censorship, plain and simple.
It harms kids, families, educators, and our entire community.
And it will almost certainly lead to costly lawsuits for York County taxpayers.
📚 We need EVERYONE who can show up to attend these meetings.
Your presence matters. Your voice matters — especially with votes expected at both meetings.
If you can’t be there in person, you can still take powerful action:
✉️ Email the Library Board: board@yclibrary.org
✉️ Copy the York County Council: council@yorkcountygov.com
Tell them clearly:
➡️ Do NOT relocate LGBTQ+ children’s or YA books.
➡️ Focus on real community needs — NOT political agendas.
Our libraries belong to ALL of us. They should reflect the diversity of our community and provide safe, inclusive access to information for every child and every family.
Thank you for standing with us.
Let’s keep pushing. Let’s keep showing up.
Let’s protect our library shelves — and the voices they hold.
