What is a hallway sweep?

Cary High is putting a system in place where the door will be locked when the bell rings. Students locked out of classes will then be looked for by administration so they can take their devices (phones, earbuds, apple watches). The only way to avoid this is to either always be on time everyday or have a note.

Why is this bad?

By removing a student’s right to automation of their own actions Cary High raises a double standard. Students are constantly told they are adults and in charge of their actions but this is only used as an excuse from staff to not help. Now that treating students like prisoners and children is advantageous they jump on that chance. They take devices away even though that has nothing to do with being late.

Students often use devices to help support them with day to day life, by removing their devices you take away students' most used tool. Not only do phones give them an easy and portable way to find information but they also give them mental support. Listening to music, talking to family and friends, and being able to access their lives from their phone are all things that help mental health. Teens have their entire lives on their phones and this gives them a sense of comfort when they know it's with them

Many students are unable to get doctors permission for special treatment at school even though they may need it. Phones give students a little more control on how they interact with the world and allow them to help themselves. Often students can be found listening to music because it calms them down. Removing devices takes away a student's ability to help themselves.

A student will only be caused to be later than they would have been because of this system. How is a student, removed from their help, supposed to get through the day?
