Stop Cannabis Cultivation in South Harrison Township

Stop Cannabis Cultivation in South Harrison Township
The Issue
We, the undersigned residents of South Harrison Township and surrounding areas, are writing to voice our strong opposition to the proposed cultivation of cannabis within our township.
While we understand that New Jersey law permits cannabis operations under certain conditions, we believe that South Harrison’s unique rural, family-centered character makes it an unsuitable location for cannabis cultivation—particularly in or near residential and preserved farmland areas.
We are deeply concerned about the negative consequences such an operation would have on our community in several critical areas:
1. Safety and Crime Risks
Cannabis cultivation sites are known to attract increased crime, including burglary, vandalism, and loitering. These are not speculative concerns—numerous municipalities across the country have documented upticks in criminal activity near cultivation sites. The presence of high-value crops, security systems, and frequent transport of product and cash poses a direct threat to the safety of nearby families, especially those with children.
2. Public Health Concerns
Cannabis cultivation involves the use of strong chemicals, fertilizers, pesticides, and fungicides, many of which can become airborne or leach into water supplies. This presents a risk to respiratory health, particularly for vulnerable populations such as children, the elderly, and individuals with asthma or other lung conditions. In addition, the strong odor emitted during the growth and harvest cycles of cannabis is known to cause nausea, headaches, and allergic reactions, and it will significantly diminish the quality of life in nearby homes.
3. Environmental Impact
Cannabis operations are resource-intensive, often requiring high levels of water, electricity, and HVAC systems. These can strain local resources and cause light and noise pollution, which conflict with our township’s conservation and farmland preservation values. Runoff from cultivation sites can contaminate local soil and waterways, further endangering the health of nearby farms, livestock, and natural ecosystems.
4. Incompatibility with Residential and Agricultural Zoning
South Harrison Township is home to preserved farmland and quiet residential neighborhoods—not commercial or industrial districts. A cannabis cultivation operation would directly conflict with the intended use and spirit of these zones. Our residents moved here to enjoy a peaceful, rural environment, not to live next to an industrial grow facility. Approving such facilities would irreparably change the character of our town.
5. Impact on Property Values and Community Trust
The introduction of cannabis cultivation would almost certainly lead to reduced property values, as potential buyers are likely to avoid homes near such operations. Additionally, pushing this type of activity into our community—against the wishes of the people—undermines trust in local government and threatens the fabric of our town.
We urge the township to stand with its residents and preserve the integrity of South Harrison by rejecting any application for cannabis cultivation within township limits. Let’s keep our community safe, healthy, and true to the values that make it such a special place to live.
