Stop Camel Rides on the Canary Islands!

Stop Camel Rides on the Canary Islands!
El problema
ESPAÑOL | FRANÇAIS | DEUTSCH
Camel rides involve coercive training, with beatings that result in injuries. Our veterinary report has confirmed a lack of access to food, water and safe resting places, as well as serious behavioral issue and physical problems such as musculoskeletal problems.
- The camel ride industry often exploits these animals at a young age—before they reach four years —when their spine is not yet fully developed, causing permanent structural damage.
- Dermatological problems. Calluses on their limbs and chests develop due to a combination of three abnormal situations: highly abrasive volcanic soil, the obligation to spend many hours a day sitting without being able to stand, and the act of lifting the weight of passengers and the saddle directly from the ground.
- The use of muzzles. Muzzles are used to prevent camels from fighting back, allowing operators to force them to work despite pain, exhaustion or fear. Their use is linked to serious injuries such as jaw fractures.
- Lack of shade and hygiene also contribute. They are exposed to high temperatures during long workdays, and when it's time to rest at the end of the day, they are usually kept in pens where poor hygiene is the norm.
Recently, an investigation by ADEMAL has exposed the cruelty behind this practice, including disturbing audio recordings of brutal beatings inflicted on the poor camels. The case, which occurred on a camel farm used for rides, has been referred to the courts.
These animals do not ask to be kept in these conditions, forced to carry loads under a scorching sun to benefit a very small number of companies and generating a negative image of the Canary Islands, particularly Fuerteventura and Lanzarote.
It is urgent that the authorities and tour operators offering the Canary Islands as a tourist destination take firm action and decide to end this inhumane tourist attraction.
There are much more ethical and sustainable alternatives for enjoying tourism that do not require the suffering of animals. Ecotourism could be promoted, where responsible observation and appreciation for local wildlife and the landscape do not involve any kind of mistreatment.
You, as a signatory of this petition, have the power to drive positive change for the camels of the Canary Islands. Together, we can pressure the authorities to establish clear and strict regulations against these practices.
Please sign this petition to demand the immediate end of camel rides. Thank you for your support!
