Stop buying Chromebooks for students, buy better, more sustainable options!

The Issue

Chromebooks are NOT a good solution for educating students for a number of reasons.

  1. they are NOT general purpose computers, they run a locked-down web browser, unreliably, and do not teach computer literacy to students.
  2. They are hilariously underpowered, so even if they were given a proper modern operating system, they would be brought to their knees trying to handle the operating system.
  3. You can't guarantee that the students will be able to access the Internet and thus, be able to use their Chromebook to do work.
  4. Chromebooks are absolutely obscenely overpriced compared to other similar options, for their capabilities.
  5. Chromebooks cannot be repurposed for anything that isn't web browsing and when the Internet bloats a little more, these overpriced, underpowered machines will become obsolete quickly, thus producing large amounts of E-waste and wasting limited funds within the educational system, requiring schools to buy more machines more frequently.

Continuing to buy Chromebooks for educational purposes will hamper computer literacy, produce massive amounts of waste in both funds and E-waste, and make students less capable of performing their school work reliably.

It is imperative that school boards re-assess the use of these awful "computers" for students and start considering more cost-effective, useful and sustainable options, such as the Raspberry Pi line of computers, particularly the Raspberry Pi 400 and 500, which are compact, cheaper than Chromebooks, come with software for computer literacy, and are capable of being used as actual computers, independent of internet access. In fact, the Raspberry Pi line of computers was originally intended for the exact purpose of being a low-cost, compact computer for educational purposes, therefore it IS the correct replacement for the incorrect machines currently in service.
