My son is a severely disabled young adult who requires a complex care package, including a 2:1 carer ratio when he is out in the community. This means that when we go to any public venue or engage in activities, we must be accompanied by two carers who provide essential support to ensure his safety and well-being. Unfortunately, this necessary level of care often results in additional financial burdens due to businesses charging entry fees for these carers.

The impact of these extra charges is not only financial but emotional. Families like ours are already under enormous stress caring for loved ones with disabilities, and being faced with additional fees can make simple outings feel even more overwhelming. This is an unfair system that punishes those who rely on support the most. It creates yet another barrier for disabled individuals to participate fully in society.

Some businesses already have policies that allow personal carers entry without a charge, recognising them as essential aids, not choice companions. However, many others have not yet adopted such compassionate policies, leaving families with no choice but to pay exorbitant fees to ensure their loved one's needs are met in line with their care package.

We ask them to adopt a more inclusive approach, where carers are recognised as essential supporters who should not be subject to additional fees.
