Stop Building Warehouses Near Our Homes

The Issue

Please sign this petition to save 800 acres of open space in Riverside, CA, home to wildlife such as the threatened Stephen's kangaroo rat, the burrowing owl, coyotes, road runners, and more. The space is surrounded on three sides by residential neighborhoods and is a beloved space for hikers, bikers, and nature lovers. Currently, there are plans to build 143 acres, or over 6 million square feet, of industrial warehouses in that space. This will not only encroach on our open space and threaten wildlife, but it will create air pollution and noise, add truck and car traffic to an area that lacks the infrastructure to support it, and increase crime. It also risks our public health as they remove the site's military weapons storage units, which may have housed chemical or nuclear weapons, and build on a designated Superfund site.

The land is owned by the March Joint Powers Authority who has been slowly selling off the land formerly owned by the March Air Force Reserve Base. They say their mandate is to "create jobs" to replace those lost when the base closed. What this has meant operationally is selling the land off to the highest bidder and allowing developers to ruin our cities by building giant industrial warehouses next to residential areas. They have already fulfilled their mandate to replace the 10,000 jobs lost when the Air Force Reserve Base closed. Tell them enough is enough!
