The Issue

In Gilroy, San Jose, and Santa Cruz, we are witnessing a tragic transformation of our environment. This situation is not just local; it speaks to a global crisis. AI data centers are popping up in these cities and beyond, bringing with them an array of problems that threaten our livelihoods and the planet's health.

These massive complexes consume vast amounts of energy, produce constant noise pollution, and require an enormous volume of water to cool their servers. The environment around these data centers is slowly being destroyed. Our ecosystems—once rich in biodiversity—are suffering immensely, with local wildlife finding it increasingly hard to thrive under the assault of heavy machineries and constant disturbances. The charming sounds of birds and rustling leaves are being replaced by the incessant hum of technology.

There's a more insidious issue at play here as well: the water crisis. The cooling needs of AI data centers are immense, leading to the depletion of our precious water resources, leaving local water bodies contaminated and undrinkable. Residents dependent on these water sources are at risk of losing access to clean water, making everyday life a struggle.

Moreover, the impact on our psychological wellbeing cannot be understated. Constant noise from these centers disrupts our mental peace and the mental well-being of the local fauna. In a world already grappling with anxiety and stress, this adds an unnecessary layer of psychological turmoil.

And let's not forget the ethical implications on society. As AI becomes more entrenched in our lives, the blur between what's real and artificial widens. The unchecked expansion of AI poses existential questions about identity, authenticity, and the nature of reality itself.

We can no longer stand by as our environments—both natural and psychological—are compromised by the overwhelming presence of AI data centers. If we do not take action, we risk mortgaging our planet's health and the social fabric that binds us together.

I urge governments, industries, and citizens worldwide to reconsider the unchecked expansion of AI data centers. We need sustainable development that respects our environment and prioritizes clean energy solutions, ensures adequate water management, and comprehensively addresses the ethical concerns associated with AI.

Sign this petition to demand a future where industries are held accountable, and technology advancements come hand-in-hand with environmental stewardship. Together, we can push for a sustainable path forward that values human and ecological well-being over unchecked technological progress.
