The Issue

UPDATE: It's 6/22, and we are still in a holding pattern. After Buell's cell tower proposal was found to be non-compliant with city setback ordinances, the Planning Commission voted to table the proposal. Buell has since signed an extension waiver that moves the deadline for city action to 8/26. We know that the topic will not be on the Planning Commission agenda for June, which means we need to watch closely for activity in July and August. A number of things could happen between now and 8/26, including:

  • Buell may submit a compliant re-design. We believe they are working very hard to do this. On 5/21 two residents observed Mayor Levine with Scott and Sarah Buell and 2 members of city staff in Wentworth Park discussing the viability of placing a tower in a clump of trees near the parking lot. This non-public meeting underscores the close relationship that our City maintains with the applicant.
  • Buell may apply for a variance.
  • Buell may withdraw the application. Note that a withdraw does not mean "game over;" Buell has a history of returning at a different time with a different application AND this would give the city time to revisit sections of the city code - like setback ordinances - that have so far prevented this from moving forward.

This waiting period doesn't mean that the deal is dead... it means that the deal is morphing and changing in ways that are not yet being communicated to residents. Your vocal and written opposition to this proposal is more important than ever.

UPDATE: On 4/28, the Planning Commission again voted to table Buell's proposal. Tower opponents made a strong showing and provided many fact-based arguments for why the tower project does not meet statutory requirements for a Conditional Use Permit, and the sticking point was an argument that a 150' tower in this location wouldn't be compliant with Mendota Heights setback laws. The Committee openly debated whether to deny or table, and ultimately decided to table because even if it were denied, the project would move to city council for a vote on 5/5 and we believe they would have voted to approve. Yes, you read that right - the Committee and many in the audience believe the Mayor and City Council would have voted to approve a project that doesn't comply with ordinances. Now we are in a holding pattern until Buell provides a re-design. Folks, it's time to get noisy. If the tower proposal wasn't bad enough, the negligence of our city leaders and their insistence that the project move forward at all costs makes it obvious that they are myopically focused on a tower rather than working with the community to thoughtfully and collaboratively solve a problem. Call city council members. Write them an email. Tell them that they need to do better.

UPDATE: At Buell Consulting's request, this proposal will now come before Committee on Tuesday, 4/28 at 7pm. They have an entire month to make their case stronger. Visual representation makes an impact, so attend on 4/28, and if you're inclined to voice your opinion give 'em hell. The city refused to expand the radius or homes that are notified, so please talk with your local friends and neighbors about this issue. And this decision may go to City Council regardless of what Planning Committee decides, so contact your council members and tell them you are opposed.

------------
Wentworth Park is a cherished green space in our community, a place where children and adults alike gather to enjoy the beauty of nature and partake in recreational activities. From playing baseball on sunny afternoons, ice skating during the winter, to relaxing with family picnics and enjoying hammock naps beneath the trees, this park has been a sanctuary for all of us.

However, this treasured haven is under threat. Buell Consulting has proposed the construction of a 149' wireless tower within Wentworth Park. This towering structure will not only disrupt the visual landscape but also detract from the park's natural beauty and peaceful ambiance. Imagine a day at the park overshadowed by a massive, intrusive tower—it would fundamentally alter the character and usability of this beloved community spot.

The presence of such a structure could result in decreased property values, discourage park visitors, and adversely impact wildlife that calls the park home. Numerous studies have indicated the potential health risks associated with prolonged exposure to wireless tower radiation, adding further layers of concern for all park-goers, especially our children.

We understand the need for improved telecommunications infrastructure, but the location of such projects should be carefully considered to avoid encroaching on vital community spaces. Alternative sites for the tower that do not compromise community green spaces deserve exploration and prioritization.

We call upon the local government and Buell Consulting to reconsider this proposal and protect Wentworth Park from this encroachment. Let us work together to find a solution that supports technological advancement while preserving our community's recreational heart.

Sign this petition to voice your opposition to the construction of the wireless tower in Wentworth Park and to advocate for its preservation as a place of solace, recreation, and natural beauty for generations to come.
