Stop Britain's Bloodline Tax
The issue
STOP BRITAIN'S BLOODLINE TAX - Your heritage shouldn't come with a bill.
Australians shouldn't have to pay to visit Britain simply because of who their parents are.

PETITION: We, the citizens of Australia, call on the UK Government to end the unfair passport rules affecting Australians who are British citizens by descent by:
- Removing the requirement for Australians to obtain a British passport simply to enter the UK.
- Alternatively, allowing entry on a valid Australian passport, where British citizenship can be verified electronically.
- If a British passport remains necessary, allowing Australians to apply and have their passport processed entirely within Australia, without sending original identity documents overseas.
- Refunding Australians who have already been forced to pay unnecessary passport, postage and related costs.
- This policy is expensive, outdated and completely out of step with the values of the modern Commonwealth.
WHY THIS MATTERS
Thousands of Australians are only discovering - often after booking holidays or family trips - that because one of their parents was born in the UK, they are legally considered British citizens.
Many have never lived in Britain.
Many have never held a British passport.
Many have never claimed any benefits of British citizenship.
Yet they are now being told they cannot simply enter the UK using their Australian passport.
Instead, they must either:
- pay around A$300 for a British passport they never wanted or needed; or
- pay more than A$1,000 to renounce a citizenship they never chose to exercise.
That's not a choice. It's a penalty.
A SECURITY RISK THAT MAKES NO SENSE
To make matters worse, applicants are expected to post their original passport, birth certificate and other identity documents to the UK. In 2026.
At a time when governments are warning us about identity theft and cybercrime, the UK Government is asking Australians to send their most valuable identity documents through the international mail.
It is unnecessary. It is insecure. It is outdated.
THIS ISN'T THE COMMONWEALTH AUSTRALIANS BELIEVE IN
The Commonwealth is supposed to represent friendship, shared history and strong people-to-people connections.
Instead, Australians with British parents are being charged hundreds — or even thousands — of dollars simply to visit family, reconnect with their heritage or take a holiday.
That isn't partnership. It's blatant bureaucracy.
IT DOESN'T EVEN MAKE ECONOMIC SENSE
Australians spend billions of dollars overseas every year.
Every Australian discouraged from visiting Britain is money not spent in British hotels, restaurants, attractions, shops and local businesses.
Why create another barrier for visitors who simply want to spend money in the UK?
THERE IS A BETTER WAY
Modern technology already allows governments to verify identity electronically.
If the UK believes British citizens should travel as British citizens, there are far better solutions:
- verify citizenship digitally before travel;
- allow entry on an Australian passport where citizenship has been confirmed;
- process British passport applications entirely within Australia; and
- stop requiring Australians to send original identity documents overseas.
These solutions are secure, practical and fit for the digital age.
IT'S TIME FOR COMMONSENSE
This petition is not about avoiding immigration laws.
It is not about avoiding citizenship obligations.
It is about fairness.
Australians should not have to pay hundreds of dollars - or more than A$1,000 to renounce an unwanted citizenship - simply to visit Britain.
Nor should they be forced to risk losing their passport and birth certificate in the international mail.
We call on the UK Government to end Britain's Bloodline Tax, modernise these outdated rules, introduce secure onshore processing if required, and refund Australians who have already paid the price.
If you believe family heritage should never come with a financial penalty, sign this petition today.
