Stop bringing non service animals into HEB

The Issue

Here at your local Heb, we have a big problem with customers bringing non-service animals/pets in store. This is a problem for many reasons:

To customers: Many of our customers have a fear of dogs, by allowing pets in store, we risk losing customers to other competitor stores who enforce the policy correctly.

To staff: Many of our staff have a fear of dogs, by allowing pets in the workplace, we create a unsafe work environment that allow their employees to work in vicinity of untrained pets when we are supposed to be non pet friendly store.

To service dogs and their handlers: When an untrained animal come in contact with another dog, it can often end in the untrained dog attacking the service dog. This is horrible for many reasons. The law states that service dogs are legally medical equipment, meaning everyone involved will end up in a legal mess. Often times after being attacked, the service dog will be traumatized and relay symptoms relating to ptsd. When the service dog is too scared to go out and do its job, the handler with disability is forced to stay home, not being able to do simple things like going grocery shopping. Service dogs take years and thoasands of dollars to train at the handlers expense, all because we allowed peoples pets in our store. If a service dog is attacked in our store it will ultimately be our responsibility to compensate the handler for not enforcing proper policy. It is not fair to put service dogs and their handlers at risk, especially when they're just trying to complete basic needs like getting grocerys.

"If an H-E-B has a bakery or areas where food is prepared-like a deli, sushi counter, or hot food section- the Texas Food Establishment Rules (Texas Administrative Code, Title 25, Chapter 228) kick in more directly. These rules state that live animals, except for service animals, are prohibited in areas where food is prepared, served, or stored to prevent contamination. That includes bakeries or any spot where employees are handling unpackaged food. So, in those specific zones of the store, bringing a pet dog would technically violate state health regulations unless it's a service animal." Credit to: Qgambit
