Stop Brighton from Building 57 Rental Units @ Uncontrolled Intersection, Venable & Ustick
The Issue
"Growth for the sake of growth is the ideology of a cancer cell." - Edward Abbey, ecologist
Brighton Corp is planning to build (EDIT, 57, NOT 60) townhouses and a retail area at the NW corner Venable and Ustick. Per the Brighton contact, Josh Beach (208-871-3812), they plan to connect this project to Woodburn subdivision via the "stub street" Buckstone Ave. This will connect to the parking lot for the townhouse development. He says "It will not be a public street that connects, but vehicles will be able to drive through to get to Venable."
He also let me know that they haven't finalized a plan for green space in that development, but says that it will meet the requirements for city code.
So. Our neighborhood, which has already seen an increase in crime (including a man in a white van who tried to lure a 15 year old out of his garage earlier this week), will be connected to a (EDIT: 57, not 60) unit "subdivision." There will be very little greenspace if they go by their previous plan from November of last year, and they will be increasing traffic throughout our neighborhood. We surely will see an increase in traffic, crime, and litter with these (EDIT: 57, not 60) new developments, and our playgrounds (which our HOA money pays for) will certainly be used by this development as well.
Please join me in demanding that Brighton not create trouble for our neighborhood because they want to build as many units as possible on this plot of land. We do not want 57 townhomes built in this already congested area with a dangerous intersection.
At the moment, the inroads for this development will be off Venable and Buckstone. There is no plan to request for a traffic light at Venable and Ustick.
With these Brighton units, we will be seeing the following already built or planned for this half mile stretch of Ustick and Venable -
(EDIT: 57, not 60) townhomes in one purposed build - Brighton
52 units in the one next to it - Low income
196 units across the street - Townhomes built across Ustick
All of this on an uncontrolled intersection with no immediate plans to put in a traffic light, despite being requested through communication with ACHD.
The density in this area is exploding. Brighton Corp told us in November 2021 that kids in this development would also use Settlers, but that is not a safe option for young kids who are unsupervised. Everyone is pushing off their issues onto the next development, or onto those who have lived here previously.
The homeowners of Woodburn neighborhood do NOT consent to taking on the troubles that this new (EDIT: 57, not 60) unit townhouse development will create. We are a neighborhood of young families, with 40+ kids at the Hunter Elementary bus stop alone. Our kids deserve to be safe. Because of this, we are against the construction of 57 Brighton rental units at this location. These will not be townhomes purchased by owners, but rentals through Brighton itself. This means transient renters, which we will already be dealing with because of the low-income housing planned for the adjoining plot of land.
We are also against the stub street, Buckstone Ave, connecting to the parking lot of this very large, very congested development.
This petition will be delivered to Brighton as well as the City of Meridian Planning Department.
Woodburn home owners are willing to support single family homes and retail in this space, but request that our neighborhood is not directly connected to it through Buckstone. We are a close-knit neighborhood that watches out for each other's kids, and we want to keep the small, comforting feel of our neighborhood.
