The issue

The persistent breaches of Te Tīritī ō Waitangi by the New Zealand Government must end. As the indigenous people, Te Iwi Māori, and Hāpu Māori, it is our right to uphold the sovereignty bestowed by our ancestors and enshrined in the Treaty. Te Tīritī ō Waitangi, signed in 1840, represents a sacred agreement between the Crown and Māori, recognising the partnership that is supposed to guide New Zealand's governance and development. However, time and again, we have witnessed decisions being made without the consultation of Tangata Whenua, a clear violation of the principles of respect, partnership, and mutual decision-making enshrined in the Treaty.

Historically, government policies have often overlooked or discounted Māori perspectives, leading to detrimental societal impacts. For instance, decisions affecting land rights, natural resources, and cultural heritage have frequently been made unilaterally. This marginalisation perpetuates social and economic disparities, which are evident in the underrepresentation of Māori in higher education, health disparities, and economic challenges among Māori communities.

We urge the New Zealand Government to establish robust mechanisms for consultation that ensure Māori voices are integral in decision making processes. This includes recognising Māori governance structures, respecting customary rights, and ensuring that any legislation or policy impacting Māori communities receives proper engagement from Tangata Whenua.

If the current Government cannot Honour Te Tīritī Ō Waitangi and recognise that Tangata Whenua are the other partner to the Crown. Then as the other Partner of Te Tīritī, we advise this Government to IMMEDIATELY STAND DOWN!

Please sign this petition to support the rightful recognition and empowerment of Māori and help forge a just and equitable future for all New Zealanders.
