Petition Summary Against the Inner Loop East Project

We, the undersigned, petition against the proposed “Inner Loop East Project” in Brazos County, Texas.

County Proposal:  https://www.brazoscountytx.gov/653/Inner-Loop-East

This project aims to create a major highway for future metropolitan development and does not actually alleviate traffic issues. This highway will increase traffic issues in the area and have significant negative impacts on the environment, community, and quality of life outweighing any potential benefits.

Key Reasons for Opposition:

1. Environmental Damage: The project threatens local wildlife habitats, disrupts natural ecosystems, and contributes to increased pollution, further degrading the air and water quality in the region.  Several places will also significantly change the drainage for the area creating problems for residents for years to come.  This will displace a significant amount of the natural habitat for many of the wildlife in the area and make it more dangerous for the wildlife in the area with increased speeds and urbanization.

2. Community Displacement: The proposed route will displace homes, small farms, and local businesses. Entire neighborhoods will be torn apart, damaging the sense of community that has developed over decades in some parts.  There are also several new communities that are currently under development that will be split in half.  Further, large chunks of the land in this area has been owned by residents for generations.  This is land that has significant personal ties value to the residents that is not being respected.

3. Traffic Congestion and Safety: Despite claims that the project will alleviate congestion, there is no congestion in this area.  It will simply bring more traffic to the area, increasing congestion and creating safety risks for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers alike. This is especially true with the school in the middle of the proposed zone and with the proposal splitting neighborhoods apart.  This new highway will increase the speed with which people travel through this area and runs uncomfortably close to many homes and neighborhoods.

4. Threat to Rural and Country Lifestyle: A significant concern is the route passing through rural and country areas that residents value for their peaceful, open spaces. Many people chose to live on the east side of BCS for its rural charm. The expansion of the Inner Loop would bring urban sprawl, noise, and traffic into areas that should remain tranquil and rural.  Many of the residents on the East side of town chose that area to avoid traffic, congestion and do not want this area urbanized.

5. Inconvenience of Prolonged Construction: The construction phase of this project is expected to span many years, causing ongoing disruption to daily life for no measurable gain for residents. The noise, dust, and road closures will affect local businesses, increase travel time for commuters, and create a general sense of inconvenience and frustration for residents—especially those who live near the construction zones.

6. Long-Term Financial Burden: The cost of the project is significant, and there are concerns that it will place an undue financial burden on taxpayers. The proposed benefit of further urbanization is not wanted.  Instead the community will be left with years of disruption and a costly infrastructure project that addresses a need that is not wanted or needed by residents.  The cost of the project is not just clearing and laying down new highway.  It also will have to include buying out a significant amount of homeowners and business owners.

7.  Unreasonable Hardship:  The proposed routes will destroy the livelihoods of many residents requiring them to move on from the area. Once master planned, attractive and sought after neighborhoods will have their property values significantly decreased due to the noise and proximity to a major thoroughfare.  Residents with Ag exemptions will have their land cut in half causing them to no longer be able to afford to live there. Many people will want to move, but will be unable to because they will be unable to sell their now unattractive and homes / land.

We urge Brazos County officials to reconsider the scope of this project, explore more sustainable alternatives, and prioritize the preservation of our rural way of life. It is essential that the needs and concerns of local residents are heard and respected.

There are other options to create an Eastern loop around BCS that impacts significantly less residents that should be considered instead.
