Stop Blak Deaths in Custody! Implement the RCIADIC

Stop Blak Deaths in Custody! Implement the RCIADIC
The issue
The ideals and aspirations of the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody (RCIADIC) are as relevant today as they were 33 years ago. And yet, the government has refused to embrace its 339 recommendations in good faith. We demand that all of the recommendations be implemented, and we require that the following be enacted effective immediately.
Rec 1
When the government implements the RCIADIC recommendations, they do so in a public and transparent way, as part of a process of public education and reconciliation.
Rec 2
That each state and territory create an independent justice committee to both liaise with the First Nations community and advise government on the RCIADIC implementations.
Rec 122
That duty of care shall be in all justice institutions.
Rec 150
That health care, mental health care and addiction therapies in prisons and all justice institutions be the same as what is available in the community. PBS medications and full Medicare rights shall also be made available.
Rec 287
That culturally appropriate comprehensive alcohol and drug rehabilitation centres shall be established on country. While drug offences are the cause of most prison sentences, we do not have a single rehabilitation unit on Noongar Country. And yet, there is plenty of room in prison!
Rec 72
That families and children be supported in culturally appropriate education. There shall be comprehensive holistic support for developmental delay, FASD and other health conditions. Allow our children - our Elders of the future - to have access to a culturally appropriate NDIS.
We also want more social housing and demand an end to homelessness!
