Stop Bell Park Cricket Pitch construction

The Issue

Update:

We would like to thank every person who took time to sign the petition and spread the word regarding Bell Park. After delegation with the Township of Langley, the Cricket pitch construction will be ceased and reversed! This is a big win for not only the residents, but also all those who use and will continue to make memories at Bell Park. We’d also like to thank the Mayor and Counsellors for hearing our concerns and acting quickly to restore this space to its original state.

Bell Park, a cherished community space is at risk. Much like many other local children, mine spend countless hours in this park. Now, an approved proposal threatens to replace our park with a Cricket pitch. This is more than just a small community park and field with very limited parking, but also a place where countless memories have been made and where kids still learn and play everyday.

In our diverse neighbourhood, inclusivity is crucial. The approved proposal of a Cricket pitch is a facility for one specific sport. This has overlooked the varied interests of our local children. According to stats Canada, Cricket doesn't even rank among the top 10 sports played by Canadian kids. Instead, sports like Soccer, Baseball and Basketball dominate (Source: Stats Canada - Most popular sports in Canada by participation - 2023). Therefore, it would be more beneficial to allocate public funds towards inclusive sports facilities or other community-friendly amenities.

This issue is not just about preserving a park, but about ensuring fair use of our public resources to benefit all, not just a select few. Furthermore, we urge our local government to reconsider the Cricket pitch construction in Bell Park. Let's preserve this public space for our children and future generations.

As neighbours and stakeholders, we were not notified, nor given the opportunity to be apart of the decision making process.
