The Issue

In my life, I have a beloved dog named Diezel who brings me immense joy, love, and companionship. Sadly, Diezel faces daily struggles with hip dysplasia, luxating patellas, and a torn cruciate ligament. These painful and debilitating health issues were the unintended result of careless backyard breeding. Like many dogs, Diezel did not receive the care that should be standard in responsible breeding practices, such as screening for genetic problems. As a result, both Diezel and our family endure the consequences daily.

Backyard breeding in Mississippi has serious repercussions, leading to countless pet animals suffering from genetic disorders, poor living conditions, and ultimately burdening families with unexpected emotional and financial challenges. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, overpopulation and genetic disorders are rampant issues that arise from unregulated breeding practices. Without mandatory spaying and neutering, these problems will persist, perpetuating a cycle of suffering and neglect for countless pets and their owners. All pets should be spayed or neutered unless owned by a responsible, licensed breeder  to prevent accidental litters, reduce shelter overpopulation, and protect animals’ health.

We can take actionable steps to address this issue. By requiring spay and neuter procedures for all pets unless the owner is a licensed breeder, Mississippi can effectively reduce the number of unwanted animals, curb genetic ailments, and ensure healthier lives for our beloved companions. Additionally, encouraging pet owners to obtain licenses through adequate training and education will create a more informed and compassionate breeding community.

This change not only supports the well-being of animals but also serves the interests of our communities by reducing the burden on animal shelters and decreasing the number of stray animals. It promotes responsible pet ownership and creates an environment where families, like mine, do not have to suffer the heartache and hardship that comes with the repercussions of backyard breeding.

We urgently call upon state lawmakers and local authorities in Mississippi to take a stand against backyard breeding. We urge for the implementation of legislation that mandates the spaying and neutering of all pets unless owned by licensed breeders. Together, we can make a difference by ensuring that pets like Diezel, and many others, live healthier, happier lives. Your support is crucial.
