The Issue

Make Meter-Based Pricing Mandatory for Autos & Cabs in Chennai

Chennai commuters are facing a daily struggle with unfair and inconsistent auto and cab fares.

Although auto-rickshaws are legally required to use meters, in reality, most drivers refuse. Passengers are forced to negotiate fares, often paying ₹30–₹200 extra—even for short distances. Common responses like “meter illa, fixed rate” have become the norm.

The issue is even worse with app-based services like Uber and Ola. Many drivers:
- Accept rides and then call passengers asking for extra ₹50–₹200
- Refuse to come unless additional cash is promised
- Cancel rides if passengers decline to pay extra

This is especially common in areas like OMR, ECR, Velachery, Porur, and during peak hours or rainy conditions.

This creates:
- Daily financial stress for commuters
- Unreliable transport for office-goers and students
- Safety concerns, especially for women traveling alone
- Loss of trust in both autos and ride-hailing platforms

In contrast, Mumbai has a well-enforced meter system where drivers follow regulated fares, ensuring fairness and transparency.

We demand the following actions from the Chennai Transport Department:

1. Strict enforcement of meter usage for all autos, with fines and penalties for refusal
2. No fare negotiation beyond app pricing for Uber and Ola rides
3. Immediate suspension or penalties for drivers demanding extra charges after booking
4. A simple and responsive complaint system for passengers
5. Random enforcement checks across high-demand areas like OMR, ECR, T Nagar, and airport zones
6. Awareness campaigns encouraging passengers to insist on meter fares

Chennai deserves a fair and transparent transport system. Commuters should not have to bargain, argue, or overpay just to reach their destination.

It’s time to bring accountability, just like Mumbai.
