Petition updateSTOP Attacks on Affordable Rental Housing by Developers in MississaugaTenants need their own Independence Day

Today is known as a US holiday for some people celebrating Independence Day. Tenants would love nothing more than to be able to be independent of all existing housing oppression but that is not yet a reality for many, including those behind this petition.

When Covid-19 hit in March 2020, it made things far worse. So while this day is supposed to be about independence, this update is being posted symbolically as a step towards tenant “Independence Day”.

Since the last update an application for human rights violations has been filed for discrimination. One tenant was singled out for resisting eviction and adversely affected. Harassment appears to have continued because of the desire to drive the remaining tenants off the land so the landlord can continue razing the property.

Landlord NYX has since surrounded the property by installing unsightly cement blocks that interfere with tenants ability to survive. The direct and indirect harm caused by the alleged discrimination of the landlord and the Corporation of the City of Mississauga also has an impact on an ongoing Charter rights damages claim currently being brought against the government of Ontario by one of the tenants.

For the full story behind this story and to read more about the cases please go to: www.standup4justice.com The Standup4justice website was basically completed today. (Please note you might need to enter the website in browser to access) It is hoped that the website will help to organize awareness around what is happening and highlight ongoing activities at the property that this petition has focussed on.

Standup4justice is also a campaign initiated as a last resort. The goal in the long run, is to help residential tenants access justice and greater government accountability. Accountability may be a prerequisite for change. Housing is like a pandemic aside from Covid-19. Unfortunately there is no final positive outcome to this petition to post yet as “Independence Day” is not a reality for those in the housing crisis. A lot more work needs to be done. Updates about the work will continue here as well as on the website.

This petition is considered a public document, including signatures and info. provided to the City of Mississauga Council, Building and Planning department. The information contained in this petition may also be subject to the scrutiny of the City and members of the general public.
